Mark is acting National Director Youth for Christ Zimbabwe. Under recent government regulations, their energies are currently channeled towards survival and consolidation as an organization with staff under enormous pressure due to the socio-economic climate. Most of his time is being channeled into the capacity building he is doing with community and faith based organizations in the area of psychosocial support (PSS) of orphans and other children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. There were many small initiatives attempting to address the tragic humanitarian crisis of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) of which there are currently 15 million in Africa with a prediction of that number swelling to 25 million by 2005. In response a friend of their who is with Salvation Army here started Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative, with the mandate of bringing some cohesiveness to the field and provide support, primarily in the area of training and equipping. Mark is currently working on two major projects, the development of a module on psychosocial support of orphans and vulnerable children for inclusion in a Commonwealth Diploma Program in Development currently being offered by University of Southern Africa and secondly the development of a comprehensive training package for use at grass roots level for empowering and enabling communities to care for their OVC. Mark and Joy have three children: Richard, Jamie, and Timothy. |
