Students and parents from Monroe School participated in two different service projects Saturday, organized by the school’s PTO.
About 70 students and parents, split into groups of 35 each, spent one hour at Monroe making valentines, paintings, pinwheels and cards of encouragement for several local philanthropies and service providers.
Another group of about 60 Monroe students and parents worked Saturday afternoon for two hours at Christ Church of Oak Brook, measuring ingredients, packing nutritious meals and wrapping packages for shipment to feed malnourished children from 70 countries, including the United States.
“We used to have a Kids Care Club that did monthly service projects for outside agencies,’ said Molly Gibson co-president of the Monroe PTO. “That club sort of fell off, so we decided to find some projects where our students could have some equity in doing something for someone else.”
Monroe students who participated in the service projects enjoyed the experience.
“It makes me feel happy when I know other people are being helped,” said fifth-grader Ella Pope, who helped packed food at Christ Church of Oak Brook. “It was fun because I was there with friends, and we liked being able to do something to help other people.”
Fifth-grader Hannah Kiperman said her mom, Annie, took her to the church to participate.
“I didn’t really know what to expect,” Hannah said. “It looked boring at first, but it turned out to be fun, and it was a great experience. I got to help someone I don’t know, but I still got to help.”
Fourth-grader Will Misicko said his mom, Maureen, signed both of them up to take part in the service project at Monroe.
“It was really fun,” Will said. “My friends were there, and they had cookies and stuff, and it feels great to help other people.”
